Education

Biosphere reserves are expected to fulfill three basic functions: contribute to the conservation of biodiversity; foster sustainable development; and provide support for education, research and monitoring within the area. Our goal is to build a culture of sustainability by creating a connection to the biosphere reserve in local education.

Our programs include: Lessons-in-a-Backpack, our annual Children’s Water Festival, and support for Lake Huron-Georgian Bay Watershed Youth Summits.

Environmental education provides an opportunity for students in the GBBR to develop a sense of place and pride for their surroundings. By helping to build aware, informed individuals, this education benefits the local communities now and for generations to come.
