Biosphere reserves are expected to fulfill three basic functions: contribute to the conservation of biodiversity; foster sustainable development; and provide support for education, research and monitoring within the area. Our goal is to build the strength of the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve community by creating a connection to the biosphere reserve in local education.
The biosphere reserve is intended to serve as a model of sustainability. We see the development of Education in the Biosphere as the most effective way of informing the local community in order to achieve a sustainable way of life.

Environmental education provides an opportunity for students in the GBBR to develop a sense of place and pride for their surroundings. By helping to build aware, informed individuals, this education benefits the local communities now and for generations to come.
