The Biosphere Action Group (BAG) promotes environmentally-friendly lifestyle choices for people living in the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve. It gives people hands-on skills to develop more sustainable behaviours. Community-Based Social Marketing (
www.cbsm.com) provides some tools for our project planning. The Lake Huron-Georgian Bay Framework for Community Action supports our activities and helps to create lower-impact living in Parry Sound, which is part of the Lake Huron basin.
For 2009, BAG is focusing on food as a theme and sharing with people how to build more self-sufficient and sustainable local food systems. Supporting local food keeps production close to those who consume it, and avoids long-distance transportation that uses fossil fuel energy, reduces the nutrition in the food, and contributes to climate change. Feeding a community this way supports economic, environmental, social and nutritional well-being.
