Home to 52 species at risk, the Georgian Bay Biosphere (GBB) staff will once again be offering ‘Biosphere Walks’ in the area and guided hikes in partnership with area cruises. Naturalists are there to point out the flora and fauna, explore the geology, and share some amazing conservation success stories! Watch gbbr.ca/events for details.
For online experiences, the popular “Life in the Biosphere” webinar series is back! With guest experts, we explore many different aspects of living in a UNESCO biosphere, from cultural teachings to gardening to invasive species and more! We are proud to present the Georgian Bay Anishinaabek Youth’s birch bark canoe exhibit at Killbear Provincial Park visitor centre, where you can learn about the story of Oshkinigig, a wiigwaas jiimaan that was constructed by Indigenous youth and community partners of this Territory. Learn about the science and technology of canoe design, the harvest and preparation of natural materials, and how communities are reconnecting with their culture. Depending on Covid-protocols, this exhibit opens in May and continues for the whole park season.
For a younger audience and the young at heart, the “Kids in the Biosphere Four Seasons Activity Booklet” will have all readers exploring the nature world in the Biosphere. This popular third edition is packed with over 70 pages of awesome activities, fascinating facts, and meaningful ways to help the environment. It includes citizen science activities, ways to help species at risk, plant and animal guides, climate champions to shrink your environmental footprint at home, Indigenous teachings and stories shared by Anishinabek people, and so much more! $10 at gbbr.ca/shop.
